Mr. Peabody explains how to help your kid fit in at school

It's not always easy being the new kid in school. Everything is unfamiliar, from the classrooms to the teachers to the sometimes-baffling food in the cafeteria (mystery meat, anyone?). While some fit in right away, others may struggle to find friends and have a sense of belonging. I know this because there was a time when I, Peabody, was the odd dog out in school... hard to believe, I know. But I found my place in the pack and with guidance your child can, too. Help your young scholar make the grade in his new surroundings by following these surefire tips. They're as easy as ABC.

Give him a verbal boost

When legendary football coach Vince Lombardi told me that confidence is contagious, I was inspired. He's right! I made certain that Sherman exuded self-assurance on the first day of school by reminding him about all the things he does well. You should do the same, whether it's your child's athletic skill, his friendliness toward others or his humor. Sherman's jokes about pizza, of all things, can't be topped.

Give him a hand

Fitting in is a gripping issue. Make sure your child gets a fair shake in his search for friendship by teaching him that eye contact, a firm handshake and a genuine smile are all it takes to introduce himself to someone new. He won't go away empty handed.

Dress him to impress 'em

The other day, Sherman borrowed my stylish red bowtie. Despite its quintessential charm, the children in his class didn't share the same opinion of it. Make sure your own son measures up by outfitting him in styles that are in vogue on the playground runway. The last thing he needs to do is make a fashion faux-paw!

Make your house the coolest place on the block

Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home, you know. Why not invite some of your child's classmates over for some fun? The last time Sherman's friends came over for an afternoon of chemistry experiments, we had a blast.

Reach beyond school

From Agamemnon to Zapata, Sherman has made many great friends outside of school, thanks to the WABAC. While your son may not have the luxury of a time machine, meeting new friends in other social settings is entirely possible, and heartily recommended, whether it's in after-school programs, in scouting or on sports teams. It's a worthy group effort.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman arrives on Digital HD on Sept. 23 and on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD on Oct. 14.
