Getting started

Valentine's Day mason jar essentials

A few crafting essentials and a little love in the air is all you’ll need to make DIY Mason jar valentines. While each jar can be easily customized based on your decorating taste, or your valentine’s favorite sweets, you only need a few supplies if you want to surprise your loved one with these thoughtful treats.

What you'll need:

  • ribbon
  • scissors
  • glitter cardstock
  • mini clothespins
  • Valentine’s Day stickers
  • a glue gun or double-stick tape
  • treats for filler: Candy, chocolates, pretzels and s’mores

Before you start decorating and filling your Mason jars, make sure you wash them and let them dry thoroughly.

I love you s’more

These DIY s’more valentines have everything but the campfire! Just stuff the jar full of sweet s’more goodness and you're ready to go! Start with marshmallows then add in graham crackers and top it with chunks of rich chocolate. Feel free to get creative and substitute regular marshmallows with gourmet flavored ones, like toasted coconut or vanilla bean. You can even add pieces of caramel or butterscotch to the mix. Sign your gift with a note that says, “I love you s’more!”

White chocolate pretzel jars

Offset the white chocolate pretzels with lots of red for a bold and bright Mason jar valentine. All you need are white-chocolate or yogurt-covered mini pretzels, a Mason jar and red ribbon, like this Valentine’s Day ribbon that's covered in hearts. Pop out the center of the Mason jar lid and top it with a sparkling heart cut from red glitter cardstock.

Pretty in pink

Pair chocolates wrapped in hot pink foil with a pink and white gingham ribbon for the girly-girl in your life. Simply wrap and glue the checkered ribbon around the rim of your Mason jar lid and tie it in a bow. A mini clothespin adorned with a heart can hold a special note for your loved one. You can also fill the jar with pink jellybeans or even pink macaroon and meringue cookies.

For the not-so-sweet tooth

If your valentine isn’t fond of sweets, or you want to give your child an alternative after the classroom candy overload, consider filling your Mason jar with non-edible treats. You can stock them with lip gloss and nail polish for your tween, a gift card to Starbucks and chocolate-covered coffee spoons for your child’s teacher, or even fun Valentine’s Day stickers for your little one.
