What it's like being a single mom who works from home

Though I am incredibly blessed, I also know that women, no matter the age, lifestyle or history can persevere and become anything they want to be.

I am a writer. At least that is how I describe what I do. My dream as a little girl was to be a novelist. However, with the pressure from those around me to build a traditional career, I went into finance and became a stockbroker. When I quit my career to become a stay-at-home mom, I thought my work life was over.

I can admit that, while living in a bad marriage that left me almost completely alone in parenting, I was bored at home with my three babies. I loved taking care of them and I wanted to be with them but I also felt a little lost. As if I let too much of me go to be a full-time mom. I needed something. Something I could create that would allow me to be a dedicated mom and still explore my creative side. Thus, ADayinMotherhood.com was created.

Five years after the first post, I am now a divorced full-time worker and mom, from my home. I am happier than I have ever been in my life. I can set my hours, leave in the middle of the day to get my kids if I need to, stop what I am doing to kiss a scrape and make every meal my kids eat. Though sometimes I feel like I am always on and pulled in 10 different directions, I can choose which direction to go.

The thing about women is that through our diversity we create lives not only for us, but for the people around us. We create the world our children know, the world that our spouses know and the world that we know. Whether we want to be a work-out-of-the-home mom who fulfills her career needs as well as her family needs or a mom who feels fulfilled caring full time for her family, we have those choices. I would venture to say that women have the ability to be more unique in the building of their lives than men do.

I may be an anomaly and I may never meet another single mother working from home and providing a lifestyle she can be proud of, but I meet women making a difference and bucking the trend almost every single day. The female gender is simply built for it!
