Cue the quirky maternity clothes. Deschanel, 34, has announced she is pregnant with her first child.
Deschanel gave the standard "over the moon" quote every celebrity gives when announcing pregnancy or baby news. (Seriously. What is with that phrase? It must be in the celebrity quote handbook they pass out in acting class.)
"Jacob and I are over the moon. We are so excited to meet our little one," she tells People.com. The couple will be welcoming their baby boy or baby girl (no word on gender yet) this summer.
Deschanel fell hard for her 42-year-old producer boyfriend, whom she has been dating since last year. Deschanel divorced Death Cab for Cutie vocalist Ben Gibbard in 2012, and she spoke out to InStyle last August on the pressures of having a baby.
"When I was married, that was the first thing people wanted to know. Like every woman is dying to give birth!" she said. "I don't think so. Nobody asks a guy that. And you go into a supermarket, and every tabloid is like, 'Pregnant and Alone!' Stuck in this 1950s ideal of how a woman should live her life. That's not something that defines me at all."
The actress will have a friend to swap pregnancy stories with, as her big sister, Bones star Emily Deschanel, is also pregnant. Emily is expecting her second baby with David Hornsby. Emily already has a 3-year-old son named Henry.
Zooey told Marie Claire in 2012 that she and her sister are very different and having a baby was never a priority for her.
"That's never been my focus. My sister [Emily] was always very motherly, babysitting and stuff. I like kids, and I like being around kids — but it was never an ambition, something, like, I need… I like working. That's what I like doing. I like to work," Zooey confessed.
Now that she has met the right man and is in the right stage of her life, her priorities have changed, and she is ready to become a mom — and we are sure Emily will give her lots of tips on balancing work with motherhood.
