How to make adorable pumpkins out of buttons

After a long hot summer, there's finally a nip in the air and that can only mean one thing — it's time to dig out our fall decor and start celebrating the change of seasons. Creating this adorable pumpkin button craft with your child is the perfect way to usher in the cooler weather. While many of those school art projects ultimately end up in the recycling bin, this is one piece of art that you'll never want to part with.

Supplies:

  • 1 (8 x 8 inch minimum) blank canvas or thin canvas board
  • Cream acrylic paint (We used Martha Stewart Craft Paint in Porcelain Doll)
  • Orange and brown buttons
  • Craft glue
  • Grosgrain ribbon in taupe
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors

Directions:

1. Paint the canvas

Have your child paint the canvas with the acrylic paint and allow it to dry thoroughly. (Apply two coats if necessary, allowing to dry fully between coats.) Measure and cut 4 (10 inch) pieces of ribbon and set aside.

2. Outline pumpkin

Lightly freehand draw or trace a pumpkin shape onto the canvas with a pencil.

3. Lay out buttons

Have your child use buttons to lay out a wreath pattern that completely covers the light pencil mark. (Orange for the pumpkin, brown for the stem.)

4. Glue the first layer

Apply glue to the back of each button and place, glue side down, onto the canvas.

5. Add more buttons

Once you have glued down the first layer of buttons, go back through and add smaller buttons where you have bare spots to fill the pumpkin in.

6. Glue on the ribbon

Place ribbon on the canvas, gluing it down as you go.

Wrap ribbon over the edge of the canvas and secure it to the back with glue.

7. Display and enjoy

Allow buttons and ribbon to dry fully before placing upright.
