The private couple never announced their pregnancy, and Mendes was never spotted flaunting her baby bump — in fact, she was seen out once and made sure to keep her bump well hidden — so it is no surprise that they didn't announce the baby's name right away.
After much waiting and anticipation, we finally have a name.
TMZ posted the birth certificate, which revealed the baby's name is Esmeralda Amada Gosling. The tot was born in Santa Monica at Providence Saint John's Health Center.
What is the meaning behind the name? Esmeralda is a name of Spanish origin that means "the emerald gemstone." As far as the middle name Amada, Mendes' character in the 2007 movie We Own the Night was named Amada Juarez. Coincidence? We think not.
The couple also has a sweet nickname for their daughter — Preciosa, which means "precious" in Spanish.
Mendes has said she likes romantic baby names. In fact, she once said her good friend Salma Hayek stole her perfect baby name choice when she named her daughter Valentina Paloma.
"I was like, 'Salma, you took my baby name.' And she's all, 'What are your other ones so that I don't take them,'" Mendes said.
Gosling, 33, and Mendes, 40, met on the set of the 2011 movie The Place Beyond the Pines and have kept a low profile throughout their relationship. Even though Mendes was rarely spotted throughout her pregnancy, sources told Us Weekly that Gosling has been getting the groceries and cooking her meals. "Ryan has already stepped into the role of caring father-to-be."

Let's hope the hunky dad doesn't stop making movies, as he mentioned he would once he started having kids. He told The Times he planned to make movies "until I make babies."
What's next for Gosling and Mendes? Marriage? More kids? We have a feeling this private couple won't be revealing any of those details anytime soon.
