One father just can't let this overprotective dad cliché go. His daughter is in for a long road ahead, seeing as she is only 2 years old. Marcus Luttrell is a retired Navy SEAL who wrote an extreme list of demands for boys who want to date his young daughter when she is of age.
Luttrell's dating demands
In just a few hours, Luttrell's immature Facebook rant was shared more than 4000 times. This is disheartening in and of itself since there appear to be thousands of people on board with the oppressive "rules for dating my daughter" theme. I'm guessing most these people are fathers who have never been teenage daughters before.
Luttrell's father-daughter rant is ridiculous and played out by this point. With requirements for future dates like "paint the house, mend some fence, cut the lawn, rope a tornado, bottle up a hurricane, and put out a Forrest fire w/ a squirt gun (sic)," this father better have enough cash to support his young daughter well through retirement.
I know at first glance this fatherly rant seems cute and even shareable on social media, but I promise that it is not. Controlling your daughter is not funny. It will not prepare her for the real world in any way, shape or form. While this dad clearly loves his daughter, he is going about it all wrong.
Teaching your daughter that a man controls her every move and decides who she will date "because he loves her" sets her up for the same type of controlling romantic relationship in the future — if she ever manages to get out from under her father's thumb.
Fathers, if you really love your daughters, teach them how to think for themselves and respect their bodies. Guide them through the dating process each step of the way. Teach them how to make their own decisions in choosing a partner and to always give consent before sex — instead of threatening every person with a penis with your shotgun. That really is backward thinking.
