Cool baby names inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy

After stealing a mysterious orb from the planet Morag, Star-Lord Peter Quill (portrayed by Chris Pratt) finds himself targeted by the villainous Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). To protect himself, and all humankind, Peter assembles a team of misfits known as the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Some of the characters' names (Korath, Nebula and Rocket Raccoon, for example) may be a bit too sci-fi for your baby's name, but the corresponding actor's names (in this case Djimon Hounsou, Karen Gillan and Bradley Cooper, respectively) may provide just the inspiration you need.

There is another fun way to pay tribute to Guardians of the Galaxy. Your baby's name, like many references within the film, can draw from 1980s pop culture. Before he was abducted by aliens, young Quill lived on Earth until 1988. His love for the era appears in subtle ways throughout the movie.

Quill enjoys '80s music, listening to his Awesome Mix Tape 1 on his Sony Walkman. As an adult, he bonds with Gamora over music. When she refuses to dance, Quill is reminded of an old fable about people who didn't dance. The fable was called Footloose.

Quill's spaceship is called The Milano. Every '80s kid knows that Milano can only mean one thing: the adorable Alyssa Milano of Who's the Boss? fame. In fact, the film's director, James Gunn, confirmed the reference with a tweet of his own.

Pay close attention and you'll also hear Quill mention Raiders of the Lost Ark and John Stamos throughout the film. If you can relate to his love of the '80s, then why not consider one of the top baby names of that decade?

The top baby boy names in the 1980s were Michael, Christopher, Matthew, Joshua, David, James, Daniel, Robert, John and Joseph — classic, traditional names that included none of the Jaydens and Masons that are so popular today.

The hottest girl names of the '80s were Jessica, Jennifer, Amanda, Ashley, Sarah, Stephanie, Melissa, Nicole, Elizabeth and Heather — names that will likely belong to your fellow parents, but not to your kids' friends.

The choice is yours: Pay tribute to Guardians of the Galaxy with a futuristic name or with a fun retro moniker from the 1980s.
