Making the firefly twinkle light is very easy and fun to do with kids.
Supplies:
- Empty 24-oz sauce jar, washed
- Water jewels (found in the floral department of the craft store)
- Waterproof lights (also in the floral department)
- Teaspoon
- Warm water
- Ribbon and hot glue (optional)
Directions:
Step 1
Fill the jar with warm water. Measure a large rounded teaspoon of the water jewels.
Step 2
Pour the water jewels into the warm water.
Step 3
The water jewels will begin to absorb the water. Allow the jar to sit for 2-4 hours. Children can check back periodically to see how much the jewels have grown.
Step 4
After 4 hours, the water jewels should have filled the jar. If there is still extra space, you can add more jewels.
Step 5
You can tip the jar on its side to see how large the jewels have become.
Step 6
Carefully drain off the excess water. Do not allow the water jewels to go down the drain; they might clog your pipes.
Step 7
You can turn on the light and insert it now, or you can add a ribbon for easy removal. To add the ribbon, cut a length of ribbon 1-1/2 times the height of the jar. Tie one end to the light and secure with hot glue.
Step 8
Use more hot glue to secure the other end of the ribbon to the inside of the lid.
Step 9
Turn on the light and push it into the center of the jar. Secure the lid in place. To dispose of the water jewels later, you can mix them into your garden soil.
