DIY Fire-breathing dragon

Most children will be able to help at every step — from tracing and tearing to cutting and gluing. The hardest part is waiting for your fire breathing dragon to dry. Once you've made your dragon, your child can push the fire right out of his (or her) mouth as the dragon chases all the knights, princesses and other toys in the playroom.

To make the dragon, you need:

DIY Fire-breathing dragon: supplies

  • Elmer’s School Glue®
  • Paper cup
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors
  • Drinking straw
  • Permanent marker
  • Red and yellow tissue paper
  • Green construction paper

Directions:

1

DIY Fire-breathing dragon craft: Cut paper to fit cup

Start by tracing your dragon shapes onto the green construction paper. For the snout, you need to roll the cup on its side over the paper as you draw a line along the edge, then repeat with the other side, creating an arc. For the head, trace the mouth of the cup, then add a bump for the eyes. Cut out these pieces.

2

DIY Fire-breathing dragon craft: Glue paper on cup

Use Elmer’s School Glue to glue the paper onto the cup.

3

DIY Fire-breathing dragon craft: glue down flap

Add some extra glue on the flap of the paper, then hold the flap down for a few seconds to secure.

4

DIY Fire-breathing dragon craft: Cut hole in back of head

Cut an X in the center of the back of the head. Make sure it is large enough to fit the straw through.

5

DIY Fire-breathing dragon craft: Glue on Face

Cut the bottom out of the cup. Glue the lip of the cup to the back of the head, then glue on the eyes. Set aside to dry.

6

DIY Fire-breathing dragon craft: Rip up pieces of tissue paper

Tear the red and yellow tissue paper into strips for the fire.

7

DIY Fire-breathing dragon craft: Glue together strips

Glue the strips together along the top, overlapping them.

8

DIY Fire-breathing dragon craft: Secure fire to straw

Add some additional glue then wrap the base of the strips to the end of the straw. Set aside to dry.

9

DIY Fire-breathing dragon craft: Draw on mouth

Once the head and fire are dry, insert the straw into the hole at the back of the head. Use a permanent marker to draw on the mouth.

The fire-breathing dragon is complete! Let your dragon breathe fire all over the house (dragon noises optional).
